How to Decorate Your Mantle Using Chicken Wire
Ever wonder how they do it? Today I’m sharing how to use chicken wire to create beautiful floral swags for your mantle this holiday season.
If you’re like me, you are always looking for creative ways to add some personality to your home decor and your mantel. Have you ever tried using chicken wire to hang your floral swags?
With the holidays just around the corner, it means it’s time to start thinking about festive decorations. In this post, we’re going to show you how to make beautiful holiday swag, for any season using chicken wire. Wait! What? Chicken Wire?
Yes! This project is perfect for beginners and can be completed in just a few hours. So gather your supplies and let’s get started!
The first time I saw this idea was on Instagram over at @suzannezinggstyle. She is absolutely the best at table decorating and creating beautiful mantle displays. Be sure to check out her page, you won’t be disappointed. Once I saw this idea, my mind wouldn’t rest until I gave it a try!
Is Using Chicken Wire For Swags Difficult?
If you’ve been around for a while you know every now and again I’ll try ‘expanding’ my craft horizons by trying new things. This was one of those times. Would this make my decorating easier? Was it hard to use? How do you attached the wire? Read more for all the answers.
In short, the answer is yes, it makes decorating easier. No, it’s not hard to use at all, and attaching the wire to the mantel couldn’t be easier.
Where to Purchase Chicken Wire?
Chicken wire is a versatile material that can be used for all sorts of projects, including crafts, gardening, and even home decor.

For my swag, I decided to give it a trial run using some of the fall items I used earlier this month before I get into full swing of Christmas decor. The difference is this time, I’ve added pumpkins, candles, and my new gold mirror we purchased thrifting for only $30.
You can use a store-bought decoration, you can DIY a decoration, or you can get creative and use an unconventional item to decorate your mantle. Most importantly, be creative!
What You’ll Need:
- Chicken wire
- Wire Cutters
- Gloves for protecting your hands
- Greenery (garland, pinecones, faux florals, any decoration you preer)
- Floral Wire
- Command Hooks
How to Install Wire to Your Mantel
Once you have adhered your wire to the mantel it’s time to start ‘weaving’ your floral stems into the wire to secure them.
- Ideas for creating a Christmas swag
- use sprigs of evergreens
- add a red bow
- attached battery operated Christmas lights (tuck the battery pack behind the greenery so it’s not seen
- tie velvet ribbon with ornaments from the swag
Creating a different mantel is one of my favorite things to do. Truth be told, I change my mantel really often. This design was a favorite.
