21 Simple Spring Home Tips and Decorating Ideas

There is something about the change of seasons that makes me want to throw open every window, pull back every curtain, and breathe in all that fresh air. Spring is a time of renewal — a fresh start after the cold winter months — and honestly, it is one of my favorite times of year to move through our home with fresh eyes.

I love refreshing the spaces in our home and outdoors when the warmer weather finally arrives. It does not have to be a massive overhaul. In fact, some of the most beautiful transformations happen with the smallest, simplest changes. A stem here, a lemon there, a little shift in how the light falls across a vase you forgot you loved.

So today I am sharing 21 simple spring home tips and decorating ideas — my personal little to-do list for welcoming the new season with open arms. These are the easy, practical, deeply satisfying things I do every year when spring knocks on the door. I hope you find something here that inspires you, friend — something that makes your living space feel like the haven it was always meant to be.

Spring is truly the dewiest of seasons — that perfect time when winter weather finally loosens its grip, and we get our first real glimpse of better days ahead. If you’ve been keeping a mental to-do list of things you want to freshen up around the house, this is your perfect opportunity to actually do them. Small changes made early in the season have a way of setting the tone for everything that follows.

Simple Spring Home Tips for the Kitchen

1. Always Have Lemons on Hand

A bowl of lemons sitting on the counter is one of those effortlessly beautiful things that works on every level. It is decor. It is a cleaning supply. It is a cocktail garnish. It is a recipe ingredient. It costs almost nothing, and it makes your kitchen smell like early spring every single day. If there is one thing I always keep stocked, it is this. Always have lemons.

2. Upgrade Your Ice Cubes

This one sounds small and it is — but it is also the kind of tiny joy that makes an ordinary Tuesday feel a little more special. Freeze fresh herbs, thin lemon slices, or edible flowers right into your ice cubes. Every glass of water, every sparkling lemonade, every spring cocktail becomes something worth photographing. It takes five minutes, and the results are genuinely stunning.

3. Keep Your Herbs Like Flowers

Here is an easy way to make your fresh herbs last two to three times longer — treat them exactly like a bouquet. Trim the stems and store them upright in a small jar of water in the refrigerator. They stay fresh, they look pretty every time you open the door, and you will actually use them. A tiny pot of fresh thyme or rosemary within arm’s reach of the stove changes how you cook every single day.

4. Stock San Marzano Tomatoes

Good quality canned San Marzano tomatoes are one of those pantry staples I genuinely cannot live without. With those and a little butter and onion, you are twenty minutes away from an elegant dinner on any given weeknight.

Spring is the perfect time to refresh your pantry, clear out the old, and restock with the things that actually make cooking feel like a pleasure rather than a chore.

I do this often, and I cannot tell you what a difference it makes. Easy meals come together in a snap,

5. Refresh Your Cutting Board with Lemon and Salt

Speaking of lemons — this is one of my favorite simple spring cleaning tricks for the kitchen. Scrub your wooden cutting board with a lemon half dipped in coarse salt. It deodorizes, it brightens the wood, and it makes the whole kitchen smell incredible. Easy, natural, and so satisfying.

6. Try the Three-Stem Rule

Any vase looks intentional with just three stems. One tall, one medium, one short. That is it. That is the whole trick. Spring is a great time to start picking up simple grocery store blooms and practicing this — you will be amazed at how polished and purposeful even the most humble bunch of flowers looks when you follow this one easy rule.

7. Apply the Grocery Store Bouquet Rule

Buy the least expensive bunch available, separate it into thirds, and put each third in a different small vessel around your living space. Suddenly you have three moments of beauty throughout your home for the price of one modest bouquet. A bud vase on the windowsill, a few stems in a vintage pitcher on the coffee table, one perfect bloom in a tiny jar by the sink. Fresh flowers make every room feel like the warmer months have truly arrived.

8. Use a Bread Board as a Tray

A wooden cutting board instantly becomes a styled vignette base. Stack a candle, a small plant, a pretty object. No “real” tray required. This is one of those creative ways to style a surface that looks intentional and collected rather than purchased all at once — which is exactly the aesthetic we are going for.

9. Add One Unexpected Color

When styling a shelf or a tablescape this spring, add one element in a color that maybe shouldn’t work. A little pop of rust, mustard, or deep plum makes everything look curated instead of matchy. This is a small change that makes a surprisingly big difference — and it is the kind of decorating tip that, once you know it, you cannot unsee it. I love combining orange and pink.

10. Put a Cloth on the Table on an Ordinary Sunday

Put a tablecloth or a linen runner on your kitchen or dining table on a perfectly ordinary Sunday. Nothing else needs to change. Watch how it transforms the feeling of the entire room. This is my philosophy to a T — treat yourself like you are the company. You do not need guests to live beautifully. The new season is reason enough.

Set a Table Just for You

You don’t need a dinner party to pull out the good dishes. Set a little table for yourself — a favorite vintage plate, fresh flowers from the garden, a proper cup of tea. My friend Ann over at Dabbling & Decorating does this so beautifully. Her post on the art of a table for one will have you reaching straight for your best china. And honestly? You deserve it.

11. Light Your Good Candle Today

Not for guests. For you. Spring is the perfect opportunity to stop saving the beautiful things for special occasions and start deciding that an ordinary Tuesday is special enough. Light the candle. Use the pretty dishes. Set the table just because. This is the whole heart of what I try to share here — the small changes that make everyday life feel like a little celebration.

12. Tuck Tissue Paper in Your Drawers

Line a dresser drawer or a linen closet shelf with pretty tissue or wrapping paper. It is a tiny secret luxury that nobody sees but you — and that is exactly the point. Tuck a dried lavender sachet between your folded towels while you are at it. Your bathroom will smell like a French countryside inn every single morning.

13. Do the Already Beautiful Audit

Before you buy a single new thing this spring, walk through one room and find three things already there that deserve to be noticed. A pretty book spine. A candle you forgot about. A vase sitting empty. Style those first. This is one of the best and most freeing decorating habits I have ever built — and it will change how you see your living room and every other space in your home.

Consider a Fresh Coat of Paint

This is one of the greatest and most underrated simple spring home tips there is — and it doesn’t have to mean an entire room. A fresh coat of paint on a front door, a tired piece of furniture, or even your staircase can completely transform the feeling of your home. It’s a great way to make a dramatic change on a modest budget, and the results are instant. If you’ve ever thought about painting your stairs, this is the perfect time.

Fresh and Growing Things for the New Season

14. Start a Propagation Station

Snip a stem of pothos or tradescantia, pop it into a pretty bud vase of water on a bright windowsill, and watch what happens. Free plants, instant charm, and the most satisfying kind of patience. Early spring is the ideal time to start propagating — the longer days and warming light give your cuttings the best possible start, and outdoor spaces begin calling for new greenery everywhere you look. I recently wrote about Trader Joe’s Flowers What to Buy: Best Spring Guide. (just in case you would rather buy your flowers)

15. Grow an Herb Pot by the Sink

One pot of fresh thyme or rosemary within arm’s reach changes how you cook every single day. It is one of those simple ways to bring the new season indoors — a little living, breathing thing that makes the kitchen feel like a garden. It is also endlessly practical. Snip a sprig while the pasta water boils. Tuck a stem alongside a vase of spring blooms. Use it in every direction.

16. Try the DIY Seed Tape Method

Make your own seed tape using strips of toilet paper and a simple flour-and-water paste. Dot your seeds at the recommended spacing, fold the strip over, let it dry, and you have perfect spacing every single time. It is a wonderful rainy afternoon project, kids absolutely love helping, and your seedlings will thank you for the head start. Spring is the best time to get your hands in the soil — even in the smallest ways.

17. Use the Paper Towel Seed Start Trick

Lay seeds between two damp paper towels, slip them into a zip-lock bag, and set the bag on top of your refrigerator where it stays warm. Check in three to five days. Once they’ve sprouted, transfer them to soil. It is the most satisfying little experiment — watching those tiny seeds wake up after the cold winter months and reach toward something new. Your seedlings get a head start before they ever touch dirt, and you get the joy of seeing it happen right on your countertop.

The Little Luxuries — Simple Spring Cleaning and Home Care Tips

18. Steam Clean Your Microwave with Vinegar

Fill a microwave-safe bowl with equal parts white vinegar and water, run it on high for five minutes, then wipe everything clean with zero scrubbing. This is hands-down one of the best easy spring cleaning tricks I know. The steam loosens everything, and the whole appliance wipes spotless. Life-changing is not too strong a word.

19. Brighten Grout with What You Already Own

Make a simple paste of baking soda and dish soap, scrub it into tile grout with an old toothbrush, and rinse. Your grout will look nearly new. Spring is such a good time to take a close look at the details of your home — the corners and edges that get overlooked during the cold weather months — and give them a little love. This is the easy way to do it without spending a thing.

20. Refresh Your Fridge Door in Ten Minutes

Decant your most-used condiments into small glass jars and give your fridge door a wipe-down with a damp cloth and a little white vinegar. It takes ten minutes and makes every single fridge opening feel like a small luxury. This is the kind of thing nobody talks about, but everybody notices — including you, every morning.

21. Refresh Outdoor Furniture for the Warmer Months Ahead

As the snow melts (thank goodness that is over) and the warmer weather settles in, take a good look at your outdoor furniture. Wipe down cushions, tighten any loose bolts, and give surfaces a scrub with a mild soap solution. If you have a pressure washer, early spring is the perfect time to use it on patios, decks, and walkways. Getting your outdoor spaces ready is one of the most satisfying parts of the new season — and it means you will actually use them when those first beautiful warm days arrive.

While you’re out there, this is also a great time to clear debris from your garden beds and storage areas — pull out anything that didn’t survive the cold winter months and make room for what’s coming. If you have a pressure washer, early spring is the perfect opportunity to run it over your patio, walkway, or deck. Pressure washing removes dirt and grime that has built up over the extended period of cold weather and instantly gives your outdoor spaces a fresh look. Even without a pressure washer, a good scrub brush and some soapy water goes a long way.

A Fresh Start Is Always Just One Small Step Away

You do not need a renovation.

You do not need a budget.

You do not need a free weekend. You need a lemon.

A stem. A damp cloth. A candle you have been saving.

Spring is the great permission slip — the change of seasons that reminds us we are allowed to start fresh, look with new eyes, and fall back in love with the home we already have.

The change of seasons is always a good time to look at your home with fresh eyes — to notice what’s working, what needs a little love, and what simple ways you can make your everyday spaces feel more like you. A spring maintenance checklist doesn’t have to be overwhelming. It can be as simple as this list — one small thing at a time, done with intention and a little joy.

I hope something on this list made you smile — or better yet, made you want to go do one tiny thing right now. That is always the goal around here.
